Making a Difference

On Thursday, September 12, 2002 the First Annual Nancy Owens Memorial Luncheon was held at the JW Marriott hotel in Houston, Texas. Over 650 people gathered in a heartfelt tribute to one of the most beloved and well-respected members of the Houston real estate community, Nancy Owens, who lost her battle with breast cancer in September of 2001.

One of Nancy’s final wishes, had she had survived her battle with cancer, was to dedicate a large part of her life to the fight against breast cancer and the promotion of its research. It is that very dream that lives on today and from which the Nancy Owens Memorial Foundation was created.

Amy Bernstein chaired the event and was instrumental in organizing the Nancy Owens Memorial Foundation and in putting together a committee of close friends whose tireless efforts, dedication and love for Nancy were the driving forces behind the highly successful event. The Nancy Owens Memorial Foundation committee consisted of: Amy Bernstein, Cheri Fama, Hedley Karpas, Peggie Kohnert, Tatum Lee, Lynn Mather, Gloria Moorman, Robin Mueck, Nancy Nunu, Mary Piper, Irby Rozelle, Michelle Sandlin, Katherine Stewart and Peggy Vineyard.

One of the many highlights of the event came at the close of the luncheon, when Amy Bernstein presented the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Houston Affiliate with a check in the amount of $60,000. In an exciting turn of events that had everyone on their feet, Maxine Myers, who was an attendee at the event, generously stated that she would match that amount, making the total donation $120,000.
